Principles and Elements of Design
Have you ever walked into a room for the first time and been struck by how pleasing it looks or how welcoming it feels? Chances are the look and feel of this room-the design-didn't just "happen." The person who designed the room used the elements and principles of design to create the desired effect. In this next unit you will learn how to use the elements and principles of design to create various effects. FOR YOUR JOURNAL: What factors (things) contribute to good design? What do you feel makes a well designed room look well designed?

ReplyDeleteThe things that I think factor in room decorating are color and where the windows and door is at. That is because you need to know how much room you have to work with in the area. If the doors are big and windows are large then you will have less room to work with.
I think that a well design room looks colorful and has lots of things on the wall. That just helps the room look good and decortive.

ReplyDeleteA well-designed room has a lot of color on the walls because I do not like plain, white walls. Everything must flow together well. I have seen some houses that everything is a different color and it did not look good together. The room's furniture must be arranged neatly, not just everything bunched all together. I would prefer having a little space between all of my furniture.

ReplyDeleteI think that the furniture is a major part of the design in someones house. It shows if they like un colored stuff or if they have dull stuff they might not be a very outgoing household. I also like when there is a lot of colors on the walls to show the persons personallity. How everything is set up is also another thing that is very important. If something if off then the whole room can look off balanced.
I feel that the color scheme plays a big part in the way a room feels and how its designed. The way the colors go with the lighting. The size of the furnature is important because you dont want tyou furnature to be to big of two small for you room. If your furnature is not the right size it will make you room look off and not perportional.

ReplyDeleteI think what strikes me the most in a well designed house is the color, and all of the furniture and art in a room. I love art and paintings so they always catch my eyes first. I also really like different shapes and sizes so like anything that had like a meaning to it or something to that effect. I love wood floors and things like that. I also love old time things such as pictures or old western stuff like that. So alot of things catch my eye but those would be about the first things that do.

ReplyDeleteThe factors that contribute to good design would be lots of color and open spaces. I like big rooms with lots of colors and fun designs. I feel like big spaced rooms and lots of colors and designs makes a room look well designed. I don't like tight spaces with lots of colors or big spaces with white walls. If i was desiging a room or house, I would want all the rooms to have some kind of color and design.
Collin- i think to design a house or a room i think it should kind of describe yourself. Like if u are big into hunting maybe u could have a room full deer mounts or something. If u are big into ranching or rodeo you will probly have a western looking house.

ReplyDeleteThe color of the wall is a big factor. Lime green doesn't feel warming, but brown or dark blue does. The color of the furniture must go with or match the wall color. There has to be a designated path to follow when I walk into the room. There has to be paintings and other artwork. I want one thing in the room to scream at me, depending on the room. The room also has to fit my taste. I don't like pink so there wouldn't be a lot of pink in the room.

ReplyDeletethe things that make a room look appealing are things like pleasant colors and good furninture. things like random colors and what not really dont appeal to me. i like simple things that are just simple and appealing. i can also live with things that are very vancy and yet not really really crazy looking. realistically i like anything that isn't random and crazy.

ReplyDeleteAlmost everything has to do with interior design, from the prints to rugs. Add different themes to the room by rugs, lamps, and differnet small other accessories. I would want to have texutre, and lots of different colors in my house to make each room stand out in its own way.

ReplyDeleteGood designing might be a hard thing to master and I think in time anyone could do this. Everyone has their own point of very on things and all rooms will be different in the world. Some people like colors that other people don't like so much. Other people really like prints like zebra or giraffe and this is me personally. I like animal prints because they stick out and really express who you are. Well designed rooms take a long time to make, but in the end they most all look good. When i walk into a room I want to feel at home and if i feel that way, I think the room is designed well. :)
I believe the color has alot of impact on the way your house looks. The color shows the kind of energy in the room, like brighter colors will be happier and excited. And darker colors are more calm and relaxing. Not everyone has good taste in design, though. But everyone is unique in their own way. The furniture has to be matching too because of you have like forty different couches, it will look dumb. So like all of the furniture inlcuding lamps, shades and coffee tables have to be the same in some way. I like color coordinating things, like if your kitchen is yellow then all your dishes will be yellow. If your bathrrom has fishies, your rugs and shower curtains will be fishies. Design your home based on your personality and interests.

ReplyDeleteTo me many things contribute, location, size, layout, outdoors, and etc. For me I would say the most important thing is making it feel warm and welcoming. In order to do that for me you need to be able to present yourself in a somewhat non-overwhelming way with the room; also to bring some of the outdoors inside.
A well designed room to me is one that contains everything it needs to feel complete. You don't want to walk into a room and feel obligated to figure out what is needed, that's not the point. Easy ways for me to bring in the outdoors are arcrilic rods and wicker things.

ReplyDeleteThere are a lot of factors in a room that can make it well designed, for example the color, the arrangement, and the furniture. When I walk into a room right away I will know if I like it or not. I like my rooms welcoming to every person, and full of expression. I like when people show what they are passionate for in a room. I love basketball so my room has a lot to do with basketball. Also I love when there are sayings on the walls, that are inspirational. A well-desinged room is homey and has a comfortable feeling when you sit down in it. Also the colors of a room is big for me, but I like certain colors for certain rooms. A well-desinged bedroom for me would have bright colors and on the other hand the kitchen would be a creme color. However every one likes a different style so my well-desinged room won't be the same as another persons.
I like the color red and sky blue colors. So we have those thing in our house. People need to take there time design a house. reis rittel

I usually know if I like the room right away when I come into an area. In my opinion I like the it when rooms feeling warming, like home, welcoming, and has many expressions throughout the rooms. The room at least has to go well instead of having many different colors and designs. I personally think that prints and texture show who you are but you don't want it to be overwhelming.

ReplyDeleteWell there is alot of factiors to make the good deisign.well you will need to make your room that decribes you and what you are in to. some good ideas are like sports in one room. I like socorre so i would but a socerre room in my house also im going to use more color to decribe me.
there are a lot of things that contribute to a good design. iti depends on what the owner likes. some people like cabins some poeple don't. that is ok. everybody likes something else. i like a western type house because i am a rancher and want to move out west when i grow up. so i want my house to be full of cowboy stuff. ReplyDeleteI have not really ever been struck when I walked into the room. Some of the things that make the room cool are the furniture. If a room has a cool couch, it can make the whole room better. The paint can also make the room look a little better.

ReplyDeletea good room to me is a room about yourself. if its about somebodyelse then it wouldnt tell your story. if you like the old ranch style then you must of or are living on the ranch or farm.

ReplyDeleteI think a good room would have wood walls and floors. it would be pretty ranchy looking and have alot of old steel things on the walls like old guns and branding irons and things like that. I have never been shocked when i walk into a room. but somerooms are pretty sweet i guess

ReplyDeleteA good design will express yourself or something that you feel passionate about. Some major things i look for in a room is space and the ethics of how it was designed. If it was just a bunch of furnature thrown into a room it doesnt have much appeal to me, but if i can look at a room and understand why it was put that way, then it isnt so bad. Then color has a lot to do with it also. I am one for bright colors and lots of intensity of some so the room is stimulating and exciting, but every once in a while a calm and cozy room is nice.
Some things that contribute to a good design is how the furniture. You have to make sure they are placed good so you can walk thought the room and you dont have to move around the furniture.

A lot of things can make a well designed room. A lot of wide open space and a good color scheme. If you just have furniture around the room it would look because you might have to move it and it will have a lot of miss matched color schemes.

Hadley, There is several different things that can make a good house. there is the color of all of the walls and there furniture. if you have red furniture you don't want to have green walls because they do just not go together at all. Also all of the rooms have to have a certa5n flow to it so everything looks nice.

Yes I have walked into a room that felt peaceful. I think a design in a room or house explains yourself. A well designed room I think I a room that has a fun color with different decorations.

ReplyDeleteI feel that if they have some really big comfy brown couches that you can sink into makes a room welcoming. Also if it is warm and smells good with kind of some dim lighting, just so that you could curl up here and go to bed. It isn't bad though to have some color in the room to make it interesting and for you to want to stay there though. that would be one of my favorite rooms, especially if it had a waterfall.

ReplyDeleteDani- The two main things that I feel extract to a room, are the color of the ways and the style of the furniture. To me the color gets my attention so I prefer bright colors instead of dull colors. Furniture is another big one, when it is designed good so that you can walk around and not have to trip over everything.

I also like the fun decorations and colors that people put in the room. It makes the room look really nice and matching. ReplyDeleteI think that furniture, flooring, lighting, and colors are what makes a room. If all of those things match and look well spaced but not too open, then you have a nice room. I like a room to almost feel inviting so you don't feel like you can't sit on the couch.

ReplyDeleteI think that there are many aspects that go into making a room have a certain "feeling." I personally like a rustic look, like what you might find in a cabin in the woods or a hunting lodge. Cozy furniture, paintings and pictures, rugs, flooring, colors, high ceilings, and fireplaces all make a room more approachable. Although these are just my favorites I can understand how other people feel other designs are more comfortable, but either way, the same aspects of design go into making completely different rooms.

ReplyDeleteUm, is this a trick question? Because there are a few different answers and they all are correct. But if I had to say something, I would say the colors, the furniture, and the placement of everything in the room. I say this because it would be a pain to move the furniture around all the time. Well, I guess "beauty is in the eye of the beholder", as my mom would say.
I guess the feeling of the room depends on what's in the room itself. contributing to colors, shapes and other things that are in the room too. but to tell you the truth I really don't know. Michael

You use some of these things for a different sized room. or the colors you want you can have a certain texture or shape. when you add the lighting it gives a big open area with a bunch of light.

When there is a good color scheme, the room may seem more welcoming. Room decoration should be a reflection of you and what you like, but also try to make it look nice. I think good things for a room is when everything flows together well.

ReplyDeleteThings I think make a good room or have good design is if they have a decorations on the walls. IF they have more that one place tosit if there is a party or something happening. If the room has dark colors it might feel unwelcoming. Having a color skeem helps in good design. A well designed room to me will be were people will want to go there.

In order for someone to get that pleased feeling, you are going to want to have those factoes. That is the definition of a well designed room.

The layout of a room is also a major characteristic in good design because you wouldn't want things to feel cluttered. I prefer more of an open layout with high ceilings to add more depth to the room. The lighting of a room is important because you have to have an appropriate lighting.

When you walk into a room most people see how the furniture is set up. So I think that this really contributes to a well-designed room. If the furniture is in a nice design it will really pull the room together. Another thing is color. Color is very important to a room because it helps either brighten the room or darken it. So I feel that the furniture and color are big contributors.
Some factors that a good design would have would be color that blend together to make the design look nice. Another good design would be that all you furniture, windows, and door all blend together and not clash. I feel that a well design would be well designed is that you have to make is you own also. You don't want it to be like you neighbors because maybe there house would describe them and they probably made it there own to.

If I see any pop cans or trash on the floor i will probably think that the person doesnt care about there house. you need to care about your house if you want it to look good. another first impression that means alot is the color. you dont want to have a puke green wall color with brown couches. that just doesnt match

ReplyDeleteI think that the factors that really make the room are the colors of the walls and floors. I also think that the furniture makes up the room. The furniture and colors of the floors and walls should match otherwise it just would not look right.
Another factor is the texture of the things. The furniture should be soft and comfortable for others. And also, the rooms just not be small, they should be quite average and have space, not just an all cluttered up room. You also want to have pictures and decorations on the wall, if you just have a plain wall, it could look boring and dull in other's views.
Furniture, the colors, textures, and lighting all play a huge part.

ReplyDeleteSome things I think make a room stand out are the colors of the walls. I like a mix of bright/exotic colors. I like the room if it has wood triming or wood design. I like to see desks and electronics such as a TV or desktop computer. I like a lot of space to move around.

I feel that a room needs to have good color coordination in order to catch my eye. Also, I really like modern furniture. Lastly, there needs to be a good layout to the room. The furniture needs to be evenly spaced so that way it's a comfortable area to be in.

Another factor is rooms that are not full of stuff. I like rooms that you have space to breath. Another factor is how you set the furniture in your room.
